Topography and Soil Characteristics
The northern boundary of Thrithala Grama Panchayat is marked by the flow of the Bharathapuzha River. The panchayat has nearly 6 kilometres of riverbank area along the river. According to local tradition, the course of the river changed after the great floods that occurred in Kollavarsham 1099. The small mounds of earth seen in the Njangattiri paddy fields are believed to have formed as a result of these changes.
Based on its physical geography, Thrithala can be divided into four major regions:
- Elevated plains
- Steep slopes
- Gentle slopes
- Flat plains
The central part of the panchayat is relatively elevated in an east–west direction, with slopes extending towards both sides. The slope gradually decreases towards the south, while the northern side has steeper gradients. Nearly 20% of the total land area consists of elevated regions.
Chinippara Kunnu is the highest elevated plain in the area. Thrithala belongs to the midland region of Kerala and lies at an elevation of about 75 to 80 metres above sea level.
